Elf
2003 NEW LINE HOME ENTERTAINMENT, DIRECTED BY JON FAVREAU
Starring Will Ferrell, James Caan, Zooey Deschanel & Bob Newhart

Elf is one of those movies you never forget. Its one of those films that always plays in the back of your mind. Even in summer, a holiday movie can seem so right. Elf has a lot to offer as a Christmas movie. Laughs, atmosphere, laughs, and especially holiday spirit.

I remember seeing the advertisements for this movie. It was to be in theatres November 7th, 2003, and I was hoping to see it then. Unfortunately, that didnt happen. And like many holiday movies before it, it wouldnt release four months later like most films do. Instead, it didnt hit the shelves until November 16th, 2004. However, When I did get to see this movie, I found myself very satisfied.

Will Ferrell is hilarious. As the films main character, Buddy, Will does an amazing job of keeping the audience in stitches. His goofy attire, dimwitted common sense, and overall happy-go-lucky persona makes him irresistable.

Buddy is an elf. Or so he thinks. As long as he can remember, hes been at the North Pole helping Santa prepare for Christmas like so many of the other elves do. But Buddy is different. Hes twice as tall. Hes half as capable. He just doesnt fit in. Buddy realizes that he doesnt belong and sets off to find his father in New York City. After a series of events, Buddy comes face to face with his father Walter (James Caan). To his dismay, Walter wants nothing to do with him and Buddy does whatever he can to gain his fathers acceptance. Buddy discovers that Christmas is in danger, as people dont seem to "believe" in Santa anymore. Can Buddy make people believe again? Especially Walter?

To pinpoint particular flaws in this movie would be very difficult. There arent many problems with it, and those that some might find wont nesscesarily make this movie experience a bad one. In my opinion, the only thing about this movie I found a little awkward was the time frame in which everything happened. It just seemed like everything happened to fast, and way to easily. But luckily, there are a thousand laughs along the way.

I saw this movie during a Summer month, and all I wanted to do was trim a tree. This movie gave me such a holiday spirit kick, that Christmas took forever to get here. Luckily, I was able to add the film to the Mount Crumpit library before the holidays began. It greatly improved and maintained my spirit throughout the holidays. And I know it will do the same for you.

MOUNT CRUMPIT RATING: 4 / 5
