How the Grinch Stole Christmas (animated)
1966 TURNER ENTERTAINMENT / 2000 WARNER BROTHERS, DIRECTED BY CHUCK JONES
Voices by Boris Karloff and June Foray
“How the Grinch Stole Christmas" is without a doubt the most popular, most important staple of Christmas. Perhaps ever. Sprung to full animation from the marvelous pages of the book by Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss), this is an absolute must for us.
Anyone who is anyone has seen this cartoon. Repeatedly. It is simply not Christmas if this cartoon isn’t a factor. In fact, most people feel the same way. Its been considered the most popular cartoon ever made, being played every night in December on both TNT and the Cartoon Network.
Why does the Grinch hate Christmas? At the opening of the feature we find him stewing atop of Mount Crumpit. The noise and cheer of the Whos is killing him and he decides to dress as Santa Claus and steal Christmas while all the Whos sleep. Only in the process, he has a change of heart. But can he undo his deed and save it for everyone in time?
My one and only complaint about this feature is its length. Although its perfect as is, I think it could have been longer.
Having seen a re-release in 2002, a double bill with Horton Hears a Who, The Grinch is now forever available to future generations. I agree that the release of this cartoon on DVD is one of the smartest things anyone could ever do, making this classic available to future generations
MOUNT CRUMPIT RATING: 5 / 5
