The Santa Clause 1996 WALT DISNEY ENTERTAINMENT, DIRECTED BY JOHN PASQUIN Starring Tim Allen, Peter Boyle, Judge Reinhold and more. Tim Allen has always kept me laughing. From his days on ‘Home Improvement”, to this classic family hit. This movie, like several of the other I have reviewed, is one of which I grew up on. From the time I was in 6th grade, The Santa Clause has been a part of my holiday season each and every year. I have a lot of memories with this movie. In the same way I do with A Christmas Story, Jingle all the Way, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. I remember how the times were when I was first introduced to this film. At that time, my family was all together. We watched this movie while we trimmed the tree. This was also the movie we watched when visiting my Grandparents who lived out of town. So, I think this film will always play a huge part of my holiday season. Tim Allen adds something special to this movie. Maybe because he acts in a way that’s downright funny. He’s a sarcastic, dry humored, yet still PG rated actor. A Perfect choice for this film. The movie concept is original (a man unwillingly becoming Santa Claus), and heartwarming. Its amazing how we’re swayed in favor of Allen from the beginning to the end. Minutes after the opening sequence of the film, you might say that he appears to be cold, heartless, and only out to protect his own personal interests. But as the film develops, we see a change in Allen. A change that makes this movie the special piece it is. Allen plays Scott Calvin. Scott is a very successful man. He seems to have everything that could make a person happy. But we find he doesn’t have the complete love of his son, Charlie, as well as the parental trust of his ex-wife. At the start, Charlie is saddened to be spending Christmas Eve with his father. That night, after burning the turkey and having Christmas dinner at Denny’s, Scott and Charlie discover a man in a Santa suit on the roof. After calling attention to the man, the Santa falls off the roof. After checking out the sleigh atop their roof, Scott puts the suit on to appease Charlie, and is soon swept up in something he’s not ready for. He slowly becomes Santa Claus. And he’s gone one year to prepare for the upcoming Christmas. I really like the presentation. Any movie that turns a jackal of a man, into a decent person, is good in my book. Because at first glace, we are expected to hate Allen’s character. And its tough not to. But once he comes to terms with his newly found fate, he turns himself around. I think that’s my favorite part of the movie. A fantastic film. At every turn, every corner, Tim Allen makes us believe all over again. If you’ve never seen this movie, this is a must. I have to say that this is my favorite of the two released thus far. For a review of The Santa Clause 2, be sure to look into Andy’s Review section.
